Steam trains, beer, penny sweets and good company…

We travelled south at the weekend to meet up with Ian and Hilary, old school friends, and their two children Jonathan and Emily. We camped at the campsite behind the White Swan at Newton upon Rawcliffe just north of Pickering. Cracking site and the food and beer at the pub was excellent especially the home made steak pie!

Despite the weather forecast not looking great for Saturday it turned out not too bad so we walked down to Levisham Station on the North York Moors Railway. Interestingly the engine was called “Lord of the Isles” so presumably had some connection with the Scottish Highlands.

Travelled up to Goathland and wandered over to Beck Hole via Darnholme. Had a very nice couple of pints at the tiny Birch Hall Inn and the kids bought some penny sweets at the adjacent sweet shop!

We then made our way back to Goathland to meet my brother Andy and sister-in law Janet for tea and cake before heading back on the train to Levisham.

Unfortunately we hadn’t booked a table at the pub, and being a bank holiday it was full so we finished up going the equally good New Inn at Cropton.

On Sunday another old school friend and his family were going to join us but unfortunately had to call off due to sickness so we had a leisurely morning having breakfast then headed down to Hornsea for my mum’s birthday.

On Monday we had a wander down to Hornsea Mere to feed the hundreds of ducks, swans and geese. Also spotted a couple of Black Swans.

All in all a cracking weekend and a nice change from climbing Munros. And anyway you really can’t beat God’s Own County!
